Kenyan Premier League side Mara Sugar FC defeated Rift Valley Region boys’ football champions Tenwek High School 3-0 in a friendly match played at Silibwet Stadium on Saturday as the Bomet-based school stepped up preparations for the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national Term Two games.
The match, which kicked off at 10:00 a.m., provided Tenwek with a valuable test ahead of the national championships scheduled for August 2–6 in Thika, Kiambu County.
Despite the defeat, the friendly offered the Bomet County champions an opportunity to measure themselves against top-flight opposition and gain vital experience before making history at the national showpiece.
Tenwek will be making their maiden appearance at the KSSSA national finals after an impressive campaign that established them among the country’s emerging school football teams.
Valuable test for Tenwek
Mara Sugar’s quality and experience were evident throughout the contest as the Premier League outfit secured a comfortable 3-0 victory.
However, the encounter enabled the Tenwek technical bench to assess the squad, test tactical approaches and identify areas requiring improvement before facing Kenya’s top school teams.
The coaching staff is expected to use lessons from the match to fine-tune the team’s preparations as the players shift focus to the national tournament.
Although they fell short against their more experienced opponents, the friendly exposed the young squad to a higher level of competition, an experience expected to strengthen their confidence and readiness for the challenges awaiting them in Thika.
Focus shifts to national games
The match also attracted football enthusiasts from Bomet and neighbouring counties, who turned up to witness the clash between one of the country’s rising school football teams and an established Premier League side.
For Mara Sugar, the fixture served as an opportunity to maintain match fitness while supporting the development of grassroots football talent in the South Rift region.

Tenwek will now turn their full attention to the KSSSA national Term Two games, hoping to build on the lessons learned from the friendly as they seek to make a memorable debut on the national stage.
