Many schools unprepared for opening, says Bungoma KNUT official

Many schools are not ready for reopening, a Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) official has said.

Bungoma East KNUT Executive Secretary Aggrey Namisi said most schools are not in a position to accommodate all learners and at the same time observe the social distancing rule.

”We still have a challenge with social distancing in our schools. The government should do the necessary to make sure all learning institutions meet the required standards,” Namisi told Education News in Webuye.

He said it would be unfair to expect teachers to enforce the Covid-19 protocols under the current circumstances.

“From what I have seen in many schools, it will be hard for teachers to maintain Covid-19 protocols,” he observed.

Namisi accused the Ministry of Education of failing to deliver on its pledge to release billions of shillings to schools and appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene. He also asked teachers and parents to spend responsibly during the festive season to avoid a situation where they will struggle to pay school fees in January
