Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) on Wednesday joined mourners at the Gigiri home of the late former Lugari Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, to pay their last respects and celebrate his enduring legacy.
The delegation, led by KNUT Second National Vice Chairperson Aggrey Namisi and drawn from the union’s Lugari Branch, described Jirongo as a principled leader who consistently stood with teachers and other vulnerable groups throughout his political career and beyond.

During his tenure as Lugari MP, Jirongo was instrumental in championing teachers’ welfare, using his position to push for improved working conditions and recognition of the critical role educators play in national development. KNUT officials noted that his support for the teaching fraternity remained steadfast even after leaving elective office.
“Hon. Jirongo remained a dependable ally of teachers, never wavering in his commitment to their welfare,” Namisi said.
Beyond his educational work, the late Jirongo was remembered as a generous and compassionate public figure whose culture of giving earned him respect across the political divide. His firm stand on issues affecting the common mwananchi and his willingness to speak out on matters of public interest endeared him to many Kenyans.
Union leaders said Jirongo’s leadership was defined by courage, inclusivity and an unwavering concern for ordinary citizens, qualities that set him apart in public life.
As the nation continues to mourn, KNUT extended its condolences to the family, friends and constituents of the late leader, hailing him as a unifying figure whose legacy of service, generosity and advocacy for teachers will remain etched in Kenya’s political and social history.
