Lucy Machuki clinches Gucha KNUT Ex-Sec seat for third term in hotly-contested election

The outspoken Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Gucha branch Executive secretary Lucy Bwari Machuki has floored three worthy competitors to retain her seat after garnering 1021 votes against her first run up Michael Nyarango who got 777 votes as Isaiah Morara and Joash Omoke got 119 and 19 votes respectively.

The embattled squared it out in a hotly contested branch union election which was marked by fracas during the nomination day on Saturday

Machuki’s victory ushered her in to serve the Branch as it Executive Secretary for a third term. Other elected officials were Esther Nyabayo who also retained her chairman’s seat by getting 935 votes against her two competitors Antoney Ogechi and Pius Ouko with 881 and 89 votes respectively.

Zachary Moturi was voted the new Branch Treasurer with 885 votes to replace Harrison Onywoki who garnered 614 votes as Vincent Mokua came last with 422 votes.

Other posts were Vice Executive Secretary won by Evans Kamanda who earned 826 votes to beat his only rival Michael Ototo.

Alvins Nyanchama became the new Assistant Branch Treasurer with 1531 votes after trouncing Simeon Muma who got 703 votes.

Teresiah Onderi became the new Woman Representative after beating Pauline Nyaboke and Jackline Osiemo.

Wilter Nyandoro trounced her perennial competitor John Juma with 1531 against 333 votes to become the new Branch Representative for people living with disabilities.

Speaking after she was announced the winner; Machuki thanked teachers for showing unwavering confidence and promised to serve them better than before. She also promised to take the branch to the next step, reiterating the Union’s Clarion solidarity calling members to remain united in order to keep the branch more vibrant.

Bomet County labour officer Peterson Asuma who presided over the elections termed them free and fair and thanked the members for their resilience to participate in the exercise peacefully after it had been faced with a few disagreements at the preliminary stages.

Also talking during the Gucha branch election, KNUT National Deputy Secretary General Hesbon Otieno attributed the amicable relationship among the three parties to the wider wise leadership of President William Ruto.

“We have a focused country’s leadership that prioritizes education development and its teachers who are the main drivers of education.” He said

He revealed that the first task the union will embark on after its ongoing country wide elections will be to review the teachers’ working conditions and better them for their success.

He said the union was at advanced stage in the continuous talk with the TSC to review and establish a long lasting solution for the career progression of teachers who have stagnated in the same job group for a long time. The review he said, will favour teachers in the common cadre who have been victims of delayed progression for a long time.

He asked teachers to apply for the acquisition of the ongoing affordable housing scheme in the country and cautioned tem to avoid being skeptical about the ambitious housing scheme which whose affordability has been cheapened by the government for teachers by waving 20 percent for teacher applicants.

“Seize this golden house scheme of opportunity and avoid regretting later because it is meant to uplift your standard of living with your families.” He said
