Lacrosse in Kenya has received a major boost following the official launch of a nationwide coaching and refereeing programme aimed at strengthening the sport ahead of the 2026 Regional School Games.
Lacrosse Kenya President Cosmas Stephen Nabungolo, who is also the Chief Principal of St Joseph’s Boys Senior School, Kitale, unveiled the two-day Lacrosse Sixes training programme, bringing together coaches and referees from across the country.
The training is being held at St Joseph’s Boys Senior School, Kitale, with representatives drawn from all regions, reflecting the rapid growth of the sport within Kenya’s education and sports systems.
Nabungolo said the programme is designed to equip coaches and officials with modern techniques and standardized rules as the sport transitions into a more structured competitive framework.
He emphasized that consistent training and officiating standards are critical to the sport’s long-term growth and sustainability.
A significant milestone for lacrosse has been its formal inclusion in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) programme, officially recognizing it as a school sport.
As part of the expansion plan, officials confirmed that 12 teams will participate in the 2026 KSSSA National Championships.
The move marks a major step forward for the sport and provides a structured pathway for identifying and nurturing young talent across the country.
Building a sustainable talent pipeline
Sports administrators said the introduction of structured coaching and refereeing programmes will help ensure fairness, improve the quality of competition and enhance athlete safety as participation continues to grow.
The initiative forms part of Lacrosse Kenya’s broader strategy to build a sustainable talent development pathway, linking school competitions to regional and international opportunities.
