A family in Silibwet, Bomet County, has appealed for justice after their daughter was allegedly attacked and critically injured in a case that has attracted public attention and triggered demonstrations.
The victim, a Form Four student at Nyangores Secondary School, was reportedly attacked while returning from a nearby posho mill.
The case has generated controversy following claims by family members that the suspect, a local resident, was arrested and later released.
The student’s mother said the family has faced numerous challenges while pursuing the matter.
“For two weeks we have been seeking help and answers. We are simply asking for justice for our child,” she said.
According to the mother, the family’s economic circumstances have complicated their efforts to pursue the case.
“We survive through casual jobs and sometimes feel ignored because of our situation. Yet our daughter continues to suffer,” she said.
She further alleged that there had been attempts to persuade the family to abandon the case.
“No amount of money can replace justice. We want the law to take its course,” she added.
The matter has attracted widespread attention in the area, with hundreds of residents taking to the streets to protest what they described as delays in the administration of justice.
The protesters demanded immediate action from authorities and issued a seven-day ultimatum for visible progress in the case.
Authorities respond
Responding to the concerns, area Chief Zephania Koech said the legal process was underway and urged residents to remain patient.
“The suspect was arrested and later released on a cash bail of Sh50,000. The case will be mentioned in court on the 30th, and investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Koech noted that DNA testing would be conducted where necessary to help establish facts relevant to the investigations.
Police reports indicate that the suspect has been charged with grievous harm.
As the case proceeds through the justice system, the family and residents say they will continue monitoring developments while pushing for what they describe as a fair and transparent resolution.
