More than 4,700 university and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) students have benefited from bursaries totaling Ksh85.2 million, disbursed by the Kwale County Government under the latest phase of its Elimu Ni Sasa education support programme.

A total of 4,735 students received the financial aid, part of the county’s continued effort to support bright but financially disadvantaged learners and ensure access to higher education for all.

Speaking during the bursary issuance ceremony in Mwavumbo, Kinango Sub-County, Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo said the program has so far supported over 30,000 secondary school and university students since its inception.

“Through the Elimu Ni Sasa initiative, thousands of vulnerable students have been enabled to remain in school and pursue their dreams,” said Kombo.

He noted that the programme has had a transformative impact on the lives of many young people across the county.

Kombo also revealed that the county government increased its annual bursary allocation from Ksh400 million to Ksh500 million in response to the growing number of students in need of support. The enhanced funding, he said, will expand access to quality education and help reduce dropout rates in the region.

He reaffirmed the county’s commitment to addressing educational inequality, particularly in marginalized areas where poverty remains a major barrier to learning opportunities.

“Investing in education is key to securing a prosperous future for Kwale,” he added.

In addition to education support, the county is also prioritizing youth empowerment initiatives aimed at increasing employment opportunities. Kombo highlighted that 43 Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) have been constructed and equipped, alongside the recruitment of 134 instructors to strengthen skills development.

“These vocational centres are equipping our youth with practical skills that can help them earn a living, create employment, and contribute to the county’s economic growth,” he said.
