In the ever-growing world of youth football in Kenya, talent continues to emerge against all odds. One such promising player is 14-year-old Ian Waweru, popularly known as “Iano 10,” a young footballer whose dream is as big as his challenges particularly when it comes to accessing education.

Born in 2012 and raised in Ruiru, Kiambu County, Ian has grown up in a difficult environment. As the firstborn in his family, he is being raised by a single mother who is currently battling health complications.

The situation has placed a heavy financial burden on the household, making it increasingly difficult to keep up with school fees. As a Grade 9 student at Gatong’ora Primary School,Ruiru sub county, Ian often finds his education disrupted as he struggles to balance learning with financial uncertainty at home.

Despite these hardships, Ian’s passion for football has remained unwavering. His journey began at just six years old, playing street football in Ruiru, where he developed the foundation of his skills. His talent soon caught attention, earning him a place at Kickers Academy, where he has continued to thrive.

Last season, Ian stood out as the most valuable player in the Under-13 category, a testament to his exceptional ability and determination. He also played a key role in helping his team finish as runners-up in the Wendani Rising Stars tournament, both last year and again in April this year in the Under-15 category.

His coach, Charles Onyango, believes that financial struggles should not stand in the way of such a gifted player’s future.

“Ian is an incredibly talented footballer. What he needs now is support, especially in education, so he can fully focus on developing his career,” Onyango said.

Ian draws inspiration from Argentine legend Lionel Messi, whose journey from humble beginnings to global stardom motivates him to push through adversity.

Off the pitch, the young star remains grounded, often helping his mother with household responsibilities while trying to balance school and football.

For now, Ian’s dream continues to burn bright. However, support towards his school fees and basic needs could be the crucial step that unlocks greater opportunities and helps him realize his full potential.
