The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Nyandarua Branch, has formally written to the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Olkalou Police Station requesting permission to hold a peaceful procession in Olkalou town.
In a letter, the union indicated that the planned demonstration aims to give Junior School (JS) intern teachers a platform to air their grievances, particularly regarding their employment status and welfare.
According to the union, the interns are demanding confirmation of permanent and pensionable terms, improved remuneration, resolution of challenges surrounding the Social Health Authority (SHA), and greater autonomy in the management of junior secondary schools.
These concerns mirror similar issues raised by teachers in other parts of the country, where KUPPET branches have also issued protest notices over delays in reforms and welfare challenges.
KUPPET assured authorities that the procession would be conducted peacefully and in full compliance with the law.
Participants are expected to maintain discipline and cooperate with security personnel to ensure public safety and minimise disruption of normal activities.
The planned procession is scheduled for tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Teachers will assemble at the Railways area in Olkalou before proceeding along a designated route covering key town points, including National Oil and Tranquil, and later returning to the starting point.
The union has further requested police presence to provide security and guide the procession.
The planned demonstration comes amid growing unrest among teachers nationwide, particularly junior secondary school interns, who continue to push for better working conditions and formal employment recognition.
