The leadership of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) today joined education stakeholders in a solidarity visit to Utumishi Girls High School following a tragic dormitory fire that claimed the lives of 16 students.
The delegation, led by National Chairman Omboko Milemba, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a painful loss not only to the affected families but also to the entire education fraternity.
Among those who died were two daughters of Junior Secondary School teachers, a revelation that has further deepened the grief within the teaching community.
Several learners who sustained injuries and trauma are currently receiving support as efforts toward their recovery continue.
KUPPET leadership called for calm and unity, urging stakeholders to avoid speculation and allow investigative agencies to establish the facts surrounding the tragedy.
The union emphasized that teachers should not be blamed prematurely, noting that their core responsibility is teaching, mentorship and learner support within schools.

The delegation also urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to conduct a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation to determine the cause of the fire and ensure accountability where necessary.
Speaking during the visit, leaders underscored the urgent need to strengthen safety and emergency preparedness in boarding schools across the country, calling for coordinated action involving the government, school administrations, parents and education stakeholders
They further committed to visiting affected families in the coming days to offer condolences, emotional support, and solidarity during the period of mourning.
As the nation continues to grapple with the tragedy, KUPPET and education leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for safer learning environments, stressing that lessons must be drawn urgently to prevent similar incidents in future.
