The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Kisumu branch Executive Secretary has warned Nyando Member of Parliament, MP Jared Okello to desist from meddling in education matters within the area

The Unionist George Osura said MP Okello should first consult stakeholders instead of coming up with road side declarations on education matters.

Speaking in Kisumu, Osura singled out an incident where Okello directed parents to pay Ksh1000 lunch fee for day scholars instead of the stipulated Ksh4,500.

Osura said the idea is not well thought since it fails to take into consideration several factors which govern the day to day running of learning institutions.

“Schools have to pay support staff in addition to other logistical issues and all these cannot be catered for by the figure fixed by the lawmaker.” Osura said

He said schools operate on other requirements such as security guards and even suppliers.

Osura said students cannot feed on maize and beans alone which Okello intends to provide albeit on unpredictable basis.

He advised the legislator to talk to school heads in order to come up with a way forward addressing issue of school feeding programme.

“Fight for hardship allowances for teachers in Nyando instead of coming up with untenable solutions.  It is only in Nyando and Seme where teachers do not earn hardship allowances or enhanced house allowances.” He said
