KUCCPS flags mistakes that could cost students University, TVET transfers

  • KUCCPS has cautioned students that mistakes such as applying for courses without meeting cut‑off points or subject requirements could lead to rejection.
  • Even qualified applicants may miss transfers if preferred institutions lack slots, while errors in personal details or programme selection can delay or derail applications.
  • The inter‑institutional transfer exercise, open to students from the 2023–2025 KCSE cohorts, closes on August 14, 2026, with KUCCPS urging early submissions.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has cautioned students seeking to transfer to different universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to avoid errors that could see their applications rejected.

The agency says approval of inter-institutional transfers will depend on whether applicants meet programme requirements, attain the prescribed cut-off points and secure available vacancies in their preferred institutions.

The warning comes after KUCCPS opened a 30-day transfer application window for students placed in the 2026 university and TVET intake. The exercise targets learners from the 2023, 2024 and 2025 KCSE cohorts who wish to change institutions while retaining their preferred programmes.

Among the common mistakes identified by the placement agency is applying for courses whose cut-off points a student did not attain. KUCCPS said applicants should first confirm that they qualify academically before lodging a transfer request.

It also warned that meeting the minimum university entry grade alone does not guarantee admission into every programme. Students must satisfy the specific subject requirements for the course they intend to pursue.

Another challenge likely to affect applications is the availability of vacancies. KUCCPS noted that transfers can only be processed where the receiving institution has vacant slots, meaning even qualified applicants may fail to secure placement if programmes are already full.

Students have also been advised to verify the information entered on the KUCCPS student portal before submitting their applications. Errors in personal details, selecting the wrong institution or choosing an unintended programme could delay processing or lead to rejection.

The agency further urged applicants not to wait until the deadline, warning that late submissions increase the risk of missing the application window due to technical challenges.

KUCCPS emphasized that transfer requests are considered individually and are not approved automatically. Applications that fail to meet eligibility criteria, programme requirements or vacancy conditions will not be successful.

It also encouraged students to familiarize themselves with the transfer guidelines before applying to improve their chances of securing approval.

“Were you recently placed in a university or TVET programme and wish to move to a different institution? Take advantage of the current 30-day inter-institutional transfer application period. Log in to the KUCCPS student portal and apply for a transfer,” KUCCPS said.

The transfer exercise follows the release of the 2026 placement results, which saw more than 200,000 students admitted to universities, TVET institutions and other tertiary colleges.

More than 57,000 candidates who attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ were, however, left out of degree placements. Following the release of the results, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba directed KUCCPS to establish a mechanism that will allow eligible students who missed the initial application window to submit late applications.

The inter-institutional transfer window closes on August 14, 2026, after which no further applications will be accepted.
