- Parents have appealed to the Nyamira County Government to address striking ECDE teachers’ grievances.
- They say the continuing industrial action is disrupting learning and placing young children in difficult circumstances.
- The teachers are demanding better pay, employment terms, promotions and improved working conditions.
Parents from Nyamira County have appealed to the County Government to listen to the grievances of ECDE teachers who are currently on strike, so that the safety and learning of their children in school is secured.
The parents said they are not happy to see teachers roaming along the streets demanding their economic rights at the expense of innocent children.
“Teachers are justified to go to the streets, but we appeal to them to employ dialogue with the government,” said John Gichaba.
They were reacting to teachers who spilled onto the road this morning, refuting assertions by Nyamira CECM in charge of ECDE, CPA Emily Ongaga, who had said that learning in public ECDE centres was going on normally.
The teachers, organised under KUNOPPET, were led by their Chairman Kasmirl Mose, Secretary Eunice Momanyi and Treasurer Linet Nyakundi.
Chairman Mose said they were ready to engage in dialogue with the government but cautioned Emily Ongaga against misleading the public that learning in public ECDE centres was going on.
He told his members to remain at home picking their tea until the government hears their cry and told parents to keep their children at home because there will be no teacher attending to them at school unless their demands are met.
A survey by Education News at different ECDE centres in Nyamira revealed pupils in ECDE attending Grade 1 classes to accompany their elder siblings. At some centres, the children were clustered, singing in class without a teacher, as their caretakers marched along Nyamira town streets and its environs, including Nyabite Shopping Centre.

The teachers’ grievances include non-payment of SRC increments since March 2023, low pay of Sh12,000 to Sh18,000, lack of permanent and pensionable employment, stalled promotions, and poor working conditions.
