The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) has expanded its sporting programme with the introduction of beach soccer, opening a new competitive platform for secondary school boys and girls.
The new discipline is set to make its debut during the Term One KSSSA Games in 2027, marking the first time secondary school students will compete in beach soccer under the national schools’ sports programme.
The move is expected to widen opportunities for talented young footballers while adding variety to the KSSSA sporting calendar.
Beach soccer, which is played on sand with fewer players and under modified football rules, demands a unique combination of technical ability, agility, balance and tactical awareness. Its introduction could therefore provide schools with another avenue to identify and nurture emerging football talent.
Both boys and girls will be eligible to compete in the new discipline, underscoring KSSSA’s commitment to expanding sporting opportunities across the secondary school sector.
Schools have also been encouraged to take advantage of the ongoing registration window by registering their players through the KSSSA portal ahead of the inaugural competitions next year.
The introduction comes as KSSSA continues to broaden its sporting disciplines and create more opportunities for learners to showcase their talents beyond the traditional school games.
Schools urged to prepare early
With the 2027 debut now on the horizon, schools are expected to begin preparations early, including identifying players and familiarising them with the demands of playing on sand.
The move is likely to generate considerable interest, particularly among schools in Kenya’s coastal region, while also giving institutions from other parts of the country an opportunity to venture into a new form of football competition.
