The police have launched investigations into the cause of a sudden fire outbreak at Bobaracho Secondary School in Nyaribari Chache Constituency, Kisii County.

The incident, which occurred late Tuesday night, destroyed part of a boys’ dormitory, leaving students displaced and property worth millions of shillings reduced to ashes.

However, no casualties were reported, as students and staff managed to evacuate the building in time before the fire spread.

According to school administrators, the fire started at around 11:30 p.m. when most students were asleep. Teachers on night duty raised the alarm, and learners broke windows and doors to escape. The school’s firefighting equipment, supported by community members and the county fire brigade, helped contain the blaze before it reached adjacent classrooms.

Kisii County Police boss Ronald Kirui confirmed that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have taken over the scene. Samples from the dormitory and electrical fittings have been collected for forensic analysis to determine whether the fire was caused by an electrical fault, arson, or negligence.

“We are treating the matter seriously and will not rule out any angle,” Kirui said. “Our officers are interviewing students, staff, and neighbors who were around at the time. We urge anyone with information to come forward.”

The school’s Board of Management has since suspended boarding activities in the affected block as repairs begin. The County Education Office has dispatched counselors to the school to support students traumatized by the incident.

Parents who rushed to the school early Wednesday expressed concern over the safety of learners, calling for tighter security and regular fire safety audits in all institutions.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers, (KNUT) Kisii Branch, has also weighed in, urging the Ministry of Education to enforce the fire safety guidelines issued to schools, including functional extinguishers, clear evacuation routes, and routine drills.

Bobaracho Secondary is one of the leading day and boarding schools in the constituency, with an enrollment of over 900 students. The last major fire incident in the area was reported five years ago at a neighboring primary school.

Investigations are ongoing, and a full report is expected once forensic results are received.
