Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Wekesa Barasa was spotted quietly studying at the Murang’a University of Technology library recently, fueling public interest after photos of the legislator deep in academic concentration surfaced on social media.

Barasa is known for his political stances and vocal parliamentary presence.

The legislator is reportedly in the last stages of studying for his PhD presentation in Data Analysis.

Barasa’s academic resume is impressive, possessing a Master’s degree in Occupational Health, Security, and Safety Science from the University of Queensland, Australia, where he graduated with distinction.

He also earned a Master of Arts in Public Administration and Management from Mount Kenya University,  graduating in 2021.

In past interviews, the legislator stated the importance of academic advancement for public officials, saying that policymaking should be grounded in knowledge.

The photos that circulated online showing the MP absorbed in books elicited mixed reactions online- Some hailed him for his dedication to learning.

This, they said, shows a good example to the youths.

In contrast, others viewed it as a calculated public relations move.

Data Analysis as a PhD focus is worthwhile in today’s economic climate and political landscape, where big data, digital transformation, and analytics are becoming vital to policy design, governance, and public service delivery.

His thesis, although not publicly disclosed, is believed to explore data-driven governance models that enhance efficiency, and citizen engagement.

As the 2027 general elections approach, observers will be watching closely to see how Barasa balances his academic aspirations with his legislative and political roles.
