- Derrick Masika, Student Association President at Kibabii Diploma Teachers College, has died after a violent slasher attack in Bungoma County.
- Police have arrested and extradited a key suspect from Uganda, who is now being held at Bungoma Police Station alongside other co-suspects as investigations continue.
- Derrick’s family has scheduled a fundraising ceremony for September 9 and the burial ceremony for September 12, 2026, both at the family home in Marakaru.
Grief has engulfed Kibabii Diploma Teachers College and Marakaru village in Bungoma County following the death of Derrick Masika Lukorito Wangamati, the institution’s Student Association President.
Derrick died after sustaining serious injuries in a violent attack involving assailants armed with slashers. The incident occurred as he was nearing completion of his studies, cutting short his academic journey and leadership role at the college. He was initially rushed to Bungoma West Hospital, where he received emergency treatment, before being transferred to LifeCare Hospital for further medical attention. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, police launched investigations and a manhunt for those suspected to have been involved in the killing. One key suspect reportedly fled across the Kenya-Uganda border but was later traced and arrested in Uganda. The suspect was extradited to Kenya and is currently being held at Bungoma Police Station alongside other co-suspects as investigations into the alleged murder continue.

The death has left fellow students, friends and residents of Marakaru mourning Derrick, who was serving as the students’ leader at the time of his death.
Derrick’s family is appealing to friends, well-wishers and members of the public for prayers and financial support to help settle medical and burial expenses. A fundraising ceremony has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2026, starting at 10:00 a.m. at the family home in Marakaru. He is scheduled to be laid to rest on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at his family home in Marakaru. Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack are ongoing.
