Kiambu’s ECDE revolution: KSh400 million transforms 500 centres attracting 52,000 learners to public schools

Kiambu Governor Dr. Kimani Wamatangi interacts with ECDE learners during a visit to one of the county's modern early childhood development centres, where the county has invested heavily in quality learning, nutrition and child-friendly facilities.
  • Kiambu County has emerged as a national leader in Early Childhood Development Education through sustained investment in infrastructure, nutrition and quality learning.
  • More than 52,000 learners are enrolled in over 500 county-run ECDE centres, with many parents moving children from private to public schools.
  • Education experts say the county’s model offers valuable lessons for strengthening foundational learning across Kenya.

Kiambu County has emerged as Kenya’s benchmark for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), demonstrating how sustained investment, visionary leadership and child-centred policies can transform public education.

What began as an ambitious county programme has evolved into a national model, with more than 52,000 learners enrolled in county-run ECDE centres and increasing numbers of parents transferring their children from private schools to the public system.

The transformation has been spearheaded by Governor Dr. Kimani Wamatangi, whose administration has prioritised early childhood education as the foundation of lifelong learning.

The county initially invested KSh400 million in the construction of modern ECDE centres, laying the foundation for one of Kenya’s most comprehensive early learning programmes.

Since then, more than 500 ECDE centres have been established or upgraded, supported by continuous investment in classrooms, furniture, learning materials, playgrounds and child welfare programmes.

County officials say the investment has created learning environments that rival, and in many cases surpass, those offered by private institutions.

Modern classrooms, child-friendly furniture, improved sanitation, outdoor play facilities and quality teaching resources have strengthened public confidence in county ECDE centres.

One of the programme’s strongest pillars is its comprehensive school feeding initiative.

Learners receive fortified porridge, milk and eggs, helping improve attendance, classroom concentration, nutrition and cognitive development while reducing the financial burden on parents.

Public schools become the first choice

The improvements have encouraged many parents to move their children from private institutions to county-run ECDE centres.

Education stakeholders attribute the growing enrolment to improved infrastructure, qualified teachers, proper nutrition and a holistic approach to child development.

Experts say Kiambu has demonstrated that strategic investment in early childhood education strengthens human capital and prepares learners for success under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.

A model for other counties

Governor Wamatangi has consistently maintained that every child deserves a strong educational foundation regardless of family income.

His administration’s continued investment in infrastructure, nutrition and quality learning has expanded access while raising the standard of public ECDE.

Today, Kiambu’s programme stands among Kenya’s leading education success stories.

With more than 500 modern ECDE centres, over 52,000 learners and sustained investment in infrastructure, school feeding and learning resources, the county has created a model that many other counties are now studying.

The programme demonstrates that when governments invest boldly in young children, public education becomes the preferred choice because of its quality, dignity and opportunity.
