The Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology is set to be operational in January next year, the institution’s Council Chairman Prof. Emmanuel Mutisya has confirmed.
In a recent interview with Education News Prof. Mutisya stated that by May 2025, all programs will be operational, announcing that the recruitment of first cohort of trainers mainly drawn from key experts had started mainly covering key areas in the digital engineering.
Kenya, according to Prof. Mutisya needed to learn from digital technology advanced countries such as India, Korea, Britain and China through transfer and skills exchange programs.
“Kenyans who relocate abroad to study or work in the advanced countries always return to the Country to either teach other Kenyans the skills they earned or to utilize the same at work place hence bring spurring economic advancement and gain of up market knowledge,” said Prof. Mutisya, who also stressed on the value of sending skill workforce to work abroad.

‘’Let us focus on exchange and transfer of skills through sending of our digital technology skilled Kenyan abroad, definitely on their return they will start to teach fresh graduates the same skills and this will make Kenya competitive globally, working abroad should not be taken as mere brain drain, there are advantages’’, insisted Prof. Mutisya.
Some of the most urgent areas of training according to Prof Mutisya would include bio technology in Agriculture while the other areas will include Artificial Intelligence skills. The first Master’s degrees which will be offered at the institution will cover Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, ICT Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering.
