Shock and grief have engulfed Kaminjeiwet Secondary School in Bureti following the sudden death of Madam Chepngeno, a teacher who was killed in a road accident at Imarisha in Litein, Kericho County.
Madam Chepngeno sustained fatal injuries after the motorcycle she was riding as a pillion passenger was involved in a collision. Despite efforts to save her life, she was pronounced dead on arrival at Litein Mission Hospital.
The tragedy has left students, fellow teachers, and parents struggling to come to terms with the loss of an educator many say had already made a lasting impact despite serving at the school for only a short period.
“It is difficult to accept that someone who had just begun building her teaching career is no longer with us. She had already won the hearts of students and colleagues through her commitment and hard work,” said Joyce Langat.
Chebet Melek described the late teacher as a role model who inspired learners through both her work and her Christian faith.
“She was hardworking, visionary, and deeply committed to Christianity. She encouraged learners to work hard and always carried herself with humility. Her absence will be felt for a long time,” Melek said.
Renewed calls for road safety
As mourners paid tribute, residents turned their attention to the dangerous Imarisha stretch where the accident occurred, saying repeated appeals for traffic calming measures have gone unanswered.
“We have consistently asked for speed bumps because vehicles speed excessively at this busy section. Sadly, no action has been taken, and now another life has been lost,” Langat said.
The stakeholders urged the relevant road authorities to install speed bumps and other safety measures without further delay.

“Road safety must be given priority. We do not want another family or school to experience the pain we are going through today,” Melek said.
The school community said Madam Chepngeno’s dedication to education and service would remain a lasting legacy, even as they continue to mourn the loss of a teacher whose promising career was cut short.
