Teachers in Kakamega County under the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have announced plans to hold a peaceful demonstration on Monday, April 27, 2026, in Kakamega Town, as pressure mounts on the government to address long-standing concerns affecting educators.

In a formal letter addressed to the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kakamega Police Station, the KUPPET Kakamega branch requested adequate security to facilitate the protest, which is scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m.

The notice was signed by Branch Executive Secretary Johnstone Wabuti.

According to the union, the demonstration will highlight several key grievances, including dissatisfaction with services under the Social Health Authority (SHA), delays in the confirmation of intern teachers, lack of autonomy for Junior Schools (JS) and pending payments for teachers involved in national examinations.

The planned protest is part of a broader wave of agitation by teachers across the country, with KUPPET branches in different regions raising similar concerns.

Among the most pressing issues is the demand for the confirmation of thousands of intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms, a matter that has sparked widespread frustration within the teaching fraternity.

Teachers have also expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation of the SHA medical scheme, citing challenges in accessing healthcare services and increased out-of-pocket expenses.

At the same time, calls for full administrative autonomy for Junior Schools continue to intensify, with educators arguing that the current structure undermines their professional independence.

The demonstrations come amid growing threats of industrial action, with some teachers warning of potential disruption to learning if their concerns are not urgently addressed.
