The County Government of Kakamega has intensified efforts to strengthen the management of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) institutions by training teachers on financial management and the implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.
The three-day capacity-building forum, organized by the Department of Education, Science and Technology, brought together ECDE teachers from across the county to equip them with skills on practical utilization of capitation funds disbursed to learning institutions.
Speaking during the training, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Dr. Bernard Amwayi, emphasized the importance of financial literacy among teachers, noting that proper management of public resources would enhance service delivery in ECDE centres.
He urged the teachers to apply the knowledge gained during the training in their daily operations, particularly in ensuring accountability and effective use of learners’ capitation funds provided by the county treasury.
Dr. Amwayi reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Fernandes Barasa’s administration to improving the welfare of teachers and county employees, citing the enhanced employee medical scheme as part of the county’s efforts to support its workforce.

The training programme initially targeted teachers from the southern region, with those from the central and northern regions set to undergo similar sessions.
ECDE teachers play a critical role in shaping learners during their formative years, a stage considered vital in the growth and development of children. Since the devolution of ECDE education, county governments have been responsible for infrastructure development, provision of learning materials and equipment, as well as payment of teachers’ salaries.
In Kakamega County, the government has continued to expand ECDE infrastructure through the construction of two ECDE centres in each of the county’s 60 wards.
The training was also attended by Chief Officer for Education Ambrose Makokha, alongside directors Dr. Jacob Kitari and Moses Akungwi.
