Concerned parents and residents stormed Arap Moi Primary School in Nkoroi, Kajiado North, on May 15, 2026, after reports emerged that a pupil may have fallen into a pit latrine, triggering protests that spilled onto Magadi Road and forced police to fire shots to disperse crowds as tensions ran dangerously high.

Kajiado North Sub-County Administrator Samuel Muchiri said the alarm was raised at around 2:00 PM after a pupil reportedly told a teacher that a child could be heard crying from the bottom of one of the school’s latrines. The report spread rapidly beyond the school compound, drawing alarmed parents and residents who descended on the institution demanding an immediate rescue operation.

As tensions mounted, demonstrators spilled onto the busy Magadi Road, temporarily blocking traffic. The situation escalated sharply and police were forced to fire shots and deploy teargas to disperse the crowds and allow authorities to carry out their work.

Authorities and other concerned parties remained at the school to monitor the situation. The toilet in question was demolished to allow a thorough search, but no child was found inside.

Muchiri is now appealing to any parent at the school who may not have seen their child to report to the school or visit the area Chief at Kamura.

The incident has nonetheless reignited longstanding concerns among parents about the state of the school’s sanitation facilities. Parents described the latrines as being in a deplorable condition, saying the structures posed a safety hazard for pupils at one of the most populated public primary schools in Kajiado North.

At the time of publishing this article, no parent had come forward to report a missing child or raise any complaint.
