Students at Kahuhia Girls High School in Murang’a County have been sent home after a security scare involving alleged fuel theft from a school generator, raising alarm over the safety of learners and property.

According to sources, a student was captured on the school’s CCTV system siphoning fuel while carrying a matchbox, an act that heightened fears of a possible fire. The incident triggered unease within the institution, with administrators citing rising tension among learners throughout the week.

In response, Principal Naomi Njihia ordered the temporary closure of the school, describing the move as a precautionary measure to de‑escalate the situation and avert any potential tragedy. Parents were immediately notified and began making arrangements to collect their children.

Education stakeholders have commended the principal’s swift decision, noting that safeguarding students must remain the top priority. They said the closure would allow time to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and provide space to address underlying issues that may have contributed to unrest.

The development has also prompted calls for a comprehensive review of school safety protocols, including dormitory security and emergency preparedness. Stakeholders stressed that such measures are critical to preventing future incidents and ensuring a secure learning environment.

As investigations continue, parents and education officials expressed hope that appropriate interventions will be put in place to restore calm and guarantee the safety of learners before the school reopens.
