The education sector in Abothuguchi West Ward, Central Imenti Constituency in Meru County, is set to undergo an unprecedented transformation for the better after more than 200 students who will be joining higher institutions of learning received goodies meant to assist them in the transition stage.
All the 2025 KCSE candidates who scored C+ and above benefited from a complete 6kg gas cylinder package and a suitcase as they prepare to join universities and other institutions of higher learning.
Education stakeholders, including parents, the clergy, politicians, government officials and other community leaders, graced the colourful occasion held at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Riiji.
Speaking during the event, Abothuguchi West MCA Patrick Muthuri applauded the students for their sterling performance and urged them to remain focused as they transition to higher education.
“As you join higher education, I urge you to remain faithful to yourselves by maintaining hard work, integrity and the fear of God,” advised MCA Muthuri.
Ten students who attained Grade A received special gifts from the MCA in recognition of their outstanding performance.
MCA Muthuri also revealed that plans are at an advanced stage by the Patrick Muthuri Foundation (PMF) to launch a laptop support programme for students from Abothuguchi West joining university.
He said that for the past six years, he has supported students joining Form One and now Grade 10 by providing essential items, including school shoes, mattresses and boxes, in a move meant to promote education in the ward.
The MCA, who is serving his second consecutive term, confirmed that more than 5,000 students have benefited from bursaries and scholarships through his initiatives over the past 10 years.
Scholarship fund planned for needy students
He, however, expressed concern over the number of bright students dropping out of university owing to financial constraints, noting that those from humble backgrounds and orphaned and single-parent families were the most affected.
“It is a big loss to our community and families if we continue losing bright minds simply because of poverty. We must do everything possible to ensure that needy but bright students complete their education,” said the MCA.
He disclosed that he will soon launch a Good Samaritan Scholarship Fund to support bright and needy students through secondary school, colleges and university.
Rev. Fr. John Mbaabu, who presided over the ceremony, encouraged the students to remain disciplined, focused and committed to their education.

The MCA insisted that education remains one of the key priorities of Abothuguchi West and committed to ensuring that no bright and needy child is left behind because of poverty.
