Justus Maore elected new KNUT branch executive secretary

By John Majau

Justus Maore has been elected as the new Kenya Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nyambene branch Executive Secretary during a by election held at Burieruri Boys High school.

The by election was occasioned by the resignation of the long serving Executive Secretary Mr. Julius Taitumu.

Taitumu resigned after he won the Igembe North parliamentary seat in the 2022 elections.

Maore emerged victorious after garnering 724 votes to beat his three other competitors with James Kainga coming second with 556 votes.
Scholastica Karimi took the third position with 308 votes while John Benjamin secured the forth position after getting 254 votes.
In the Treasurer seat Kariungi was declared the winner after he garnered 1,106 votes against his sole opponent Fredlick Kamenchu who got 738 votes.

It was the second time the by election was being held after the first was postponed when chaos erupted during the exercise.

Speaking after the by election, KNUT National Treasurer, Kullow Mohammed and other officials who presided over the exercise, said they had no preferred candidate in mind noting that the will of the teachers had won.

He said the teachers exercised their democratic right by electing a person who can support, serve and be there for them.

“Leadership is about compliment with the loser embracing and supporting the winner. Teachers have made their choice through the ballot. Let the loser accept defeat and support the winner because we can’t all be leaders at the same time,” said the Treasurer.

He called on all teachers to always remain strong by being united noting that they will have more bargaining power if they remain united.

He also said that teachers have a right to worship like any other citizen and therefore there will be no training for teachers over the weekend.
