A grade-5 child is in critical condition at Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital after being attacked by a hyena in the area.
Reportedly, the child’s mother, Esther Kwamboka, recounted that the incident occurred as the child fetched water from a nearby village spring.
The hyena, lurking in the vicinity, pounced on the child, inflicting severe injuries before retreating into a nearby tea farm.
Villagers, alerted by the commotion, promptly pursued and killed the male hyena.
Richard Moreka, a resident, speculated about the presence of a female companion and their pups, urging caution when crossing the river.
Accompanied by Henry Matoke, he called the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) to assess the situation and implement interventions to alleviate the pervasive fear among residents.
As Education News visited the area near Esani Secondary School, the wounded hyena remained partially alive, writhing in pain on the ground.
