The Government has intensified efforts to restore stability at Moi University after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba convened a high-level consultative meeting with the university’s leadership and the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) to chart a new path for the institution.
The strategic meeting, held on Wednesday, brought together the Moi University Council, the university management and national officials of UASU in what stakeholders described as a significant step towards resolving long-standing challenges facing one of Kenya’s oldest public universities.
The discussions focused on governance, staff welfare, institutional reforms and measures aimed at fostering industrial harmony while safeguarding the quality of higher education at the institution.
The meeting comes as Moi University continues to grapple with financial constraints, governance concerns and recurring labour disputes that have disrupted academic programmes and raised concerns among students, parents and other education stakeholders.
Cabinet Secretary Ogamba said collaboration among the university council, management and staff unions is critical to rebuilding confidence in the institution. He noted that universities remain key pillars of national development through teaching, research, innovation and the training of skilled professionals.
He reiterated the Government’s commitment to strengthening public universities by promoting sound governance, financial accountability and responsible leadership while protecting the interests of lecturers, non-teaching staff and students.
Staff welfare and governance reforms discussed
A key agenda during the meeting was the welfare of academic staff, with UASU representatives presenting concerns affecting lecturers and calling for continued engagement to improve working conditions and institutional stability.
Participants agreed that constructive dialogue remains the most effective way of resolving disputes and preventing disruptions to learning.
The meeting also explored strategies to strengthen governance structures, improve operational efficiency and reinforce accountability mechanisms to enable Moi University to recover from its current challenges and remain competitive in Kenya’s higher education sector.
Ministry commits to continued engagement
Education stakeholders welcomed the consultative approach adopted by the Ministry, saying sustainable reforms can only succeed through cooperation between university councils, management, staff unions and the Government.
Also present at the meeting was Principal Secretary for Higher Education Dr Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, who reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting universities through policy reforms, effective leadership and continuous stakeholder engagement.
The consultative meeting is expected to pave the way for further engagements as the Ministry works with the university leadership and staff representatives to implement practical solutions that address governance challenges, improve staff welfare and enhance service delivery.

The Government said the outcomes of the meeting are expected to strengthen industrial relations, restore stakeholder confidence and position Moi University to continue delivering quality education, research and innovation.
