Governor commissions polytechnics, ECDE centres to boost education sector

Kakamega County under the leadership of Governor Fernandez Barasa has completed and commissioned two county polytechnics in just four months in office.

The governor who was speaking during the official opening of the second session of the third County Assembly noted that Matawa County Polytechnic in Mumias West sub county and Bunyala West County Polytechnic in Navakholo sub county have been commissioned for use together with 6 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers.

“We have the following ECDE centers which are completed and already in use; Sivombe ECDE in Navakholo sub county, Eshiyenga ECDE in Navakholo sub county, St. Christopher Nyapora ECDE in Mumias West sub county,  Koyonzo ECDE in Matungu sub county,  Emurabe ECDE in Matungu sub county and Eshikulusi ECDE in Butere sub county,” Barasa stated.

The county Chief disclosed that it has awarded 12 bright and needy students – one from each of the 12 sub counties – with full undergraduate scholarships worth Ksh 23 million to further their higher education.

“We also initiated the process of funding the Ward Based Bursary worth Ksh 120 million to increase access to quality education for needy students across the county,” he said.

Barasa also said his government has implemented Scheme of Service for ECDE teachers and county polytechnic instructors where 1,971 ECDE teachers and 173 polytechnic instructors have been hired on permanent and pensionable terms.

“We have similarly purchased 1.5 hectares of land for construction of Mahola Polytechnic in Mumias East sub county,” the Governor said.
