Kisumu County Govenor, Anyang Nyong’o, has demanded for the arrest and prosecution of the officer who shot dead a third year Maseno University student during the Monday’s mass demontrations by Azimio One Kenya coalition against the high cost of living in the country.
Angry Maseno University students on Tuesday took to the streets to protest the killing of their colleague during the mass action.
The students who took to the streets of Maseno town also demanded justice for the third year student whose name has been released as William Mayange. The slain was shot in the neck and was later pronounced dead at the Coptic Hospital. He was shot dead on Monday evening.
The governor in a statement said the trigger happy officer shot the literature student without any lawful cause.
Nyong’o said the student was murdered in cold blood as he and his colleagues were demonstrating at Maseno center over the high cost of living.
“It is unfortunate that instead of using tear gas or rubber bullets, the police chose to fire live ammunition at the students,” he said.
He said the police should exhibit professionalism and restraint while quelling riots instead of using brutality on un-armed protestors.
“As we send condolence messages to the family of the slain student and the Maseno University fraternity, we demand that the police officer who fired the killer bullet be arrested and prosecuted as soon as possible”.
According to police reports the deceased was among students who raided the Maseno Police Line and damaged houses.
They also went ahead to burn tyres along the Kisumu – Busia highway and pelted motorists with stones.
Several politicians from Tuesday evening had unmasked the police officer who had fired the killer bullet. We cannot however reveal the name as it is subject to an active police investigation.
