- Governor Fernandes Barasa has flagged off Kakamega’s two teams for the FEASSSA Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.
- Green Commandos and St. Martha’s Mwitoti Girls have qualified after winning national titles at the KSSSA Championships in Thika.
- The county government has provided KSh300,000 to support the teams’ preparations for the regional competition.
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has officially flagged off two county teams to represent Kenya at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games set for Morogoro, Tanzania, from August 14 to 23, 2026.
The send-off followed a dinner the governor hosted on Friday evening for Green Commandos of Kakamega High School and St. Martha’s Mwitoti Girls Volleyball Team, both of which secured their regional slots through strong showings at the recently concluded Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Championships in Thika.
Green Commandos were crowned national boys’ football champions after edging St. Mary’s School Yala 3-2 in a thrilling final, while St. Martha’s Mwitoti Girls claimed third place in girls’ volleyball, defeating Kwanthanze Girls High School 3-1 to book their place on the regional stage.
Governor Barasa congratulated the two teams and urged the players to maintain discipline, unity and focus as they aim to extend Kakamega’s dominance in regional school sports. To support their preparations, the county government presented a total of KSh300,000 to the teams, with Green Commandos receiving KSh200,000 and St. Martha’s Mwitoti Girls receiving KSh100,000.

The governor said his administration would continue investing in sports infrastructure, talent identification and development programmes to give young athletes opportunities to pursue education, employment and professional careers through sport. He cited the annual Governor’s Cup as one of the initiatives the county has put in place to identify and nurture sporting talent.
“Sports remain a key driver of youth empowerment, social cohesion and economic development,” Barasa said, urging the players to remain good ambassadors of both Kakamega and Kenya during the regional championship.
Barasa also announced plans to facilitate a strong contingent of supporters to travel to Tanzania to rally behind the two teams during the FEASSSA Games, which will bring together secondary school sporting talent from across East Africa.

The governor was accompanied at the send-off by County Executive Committee Member for Social Services, Sports, Youth, Gender and Culture CPA Jackline Kakai Masicha, alongside chief officers, KSSSA officials led by Kakamega County chairman Lazarous Makokha, school principals, coaches and other county government officials.
With the two teams now bound for Morogoro, Kakamega will be hoping Green Commandos and St. Martha’s Mwitoti Girls uphold the county’s long-standing reputation as a powerhouse in school sports and deliver strong performances against their regional counterparts.
