Government delivers 73% of ESP desks to Siaya County

By Erick Nyayiera

The government through the Ministry of Education has so far delivered 73% of the desks given to schools in Siaya County under the Economic Stimulus Program (ESP).

In a report forwarded to journalists, Siaya County Director of Education Dr. Joseph Wamocho indicated that they have so far delivered 3970 desks to 57 primary schools and 2505 lockers and chairs to 54 secondary schools across the county.

He revealed that the Siaya sub-county is leading at 90% in terms of delivery, followed by Rarieda sub-county at 84% then the Ugenya sub-county at 78%.

Mr. Wamocho indicated that Gem is fourth at 64% in terms of delivery of the ESP desks, chairs and lockers followed by Bondo and Ugunja at 61% and 60% respectively.

According to the report, the rate at which the items are being delivered to schools was going at a snail pace because the majority of artisans and workshops are said to have been financially constrained.

The Director of Education, however, added that the piecemeal deliveries are mainly because the allotment of the work for the construction of the items was given to many artisans, adding that the artisans are determined to fill the delivery gaps as soon as possible.

The project is set to benefit 204 schools including 90 secondary schools and 114 primary schools across the county.
