A 16-year old girl is currently fighting for her life at Migori County Level Four Hospital after she was attacked by a hippopotamus along Makwany beach in the Muhuru location, Nyatike sub-county.

According to the area chief, Mr. John Madara, the girl had gone to bathe before she was attacked by the hippo.

“The girl sustained injuries after she got bit by the hippo on her knee and stomach exposing her intestines and other internal organs. She was rushed to the nearest hospital before she got transferred to the County’s’ referral hospital in Migori town,” said Madara.

Madara also told the Education News that in the recent past, locals along the beach have been living in fear due to an increase in the number of hippopotamuses in the area.

“Before the attack on the girl, a woman had also been chased by one of the hippos forcing her to run away naked in a bid to save her life,” Noted Madara.

He, however, urged the Kenya wildlife service officers to move swiftly and enhance the safety of the locals.
