Gilgil teachers mourn prolific teacher, swimming coach

Greensteds International School

Teachers in Gilgil sub-county, Nakuru County, are eulogizing Linet Atieno, a teacher and international swimming coach who passed on early this month.

While paying their last respects during her memorial service at Greensted International School, sports stakeholders, Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) leaders, parents and students from the county described Atieno as a competitive and hardworking coach who consistently led several teams up from the sub-county to the East African level.

School Principal Patrick Teiye described the Coach as talented and said that she will remain in the memory of hundreds of students whom she taught, trained and nurtured.

“She has left a mark that will stay with us forever, be it student, teacher or parent,” he said.

Gilgil sub-county sports officials heaped praises on Atieno, highlighting her major contributions towards improving sports standards, especially swimming.

They termed her as an icon who assisted many students in developing an interest in swimming.

KUPPET Nakuru Executive Secretary Duncan Macharia lauded Atieno terming her role as a huge gap that will be hard to fill in the near future.

“Coach Linet Atieno was a role model and Olympic swimming champion whose efforts in nurturing students’ talents shall not go unappreciated. KUPPET Nakuru County recognizes the effort and contribution of teachers in sports and we urge her fellow teachers to follow her lead,” he said.

The late Coach Linet Atieno will be buried in Alego Usonga sub-county, Siaya County this Saturday.
