Free lunch for learners as govt rolls out feeding programme

Feeding

It is all smiles for learners in West Pokot after the national government rolled out the feeding programme to schools in the area.

The school feeding programme which was rolled out by President William Ruto is now being celebrated by learners across the board.

The project, a brain child of Nairobi Governor, Johnson Sakaja and the president was ushered into Parliament by the Kakamega Woman Representative, Elsie Muhanda and has gained popularity especially in Arid and Semi-Arid areas where food and water scarce.

It was resolved in the order paper of Parliament in October 13, 2022 that the programme be initiated through the relevant state department and it further stated that feeding has to be inaugurated and sustained across all basic education pupils to ensure that children are maintained in schools for effective learning and general well-being.

An elated learner who was not ready to disclose her details because of the sensitivity of the matter said that without food, life was hard, saying that she stays with her grandmother who has no capacity to provide even a single meal. She said that it is teachers’ and neighbours’ good will that sustains their survival.
