A mysterious fire on Monday night reduced a dormitory at Makutano Boys High School in Mwala Sub-County, Machakos, to ashes, sending hundreds of students into panic.

Confirming the incident, Mwala Sub-County Director of Education, Stephen Kitungu, said investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the fire, which broke out when students were in evening prep. No injuries were reported.

Kitungu who spoke at the school  revealed that during a meeting with the students on Tuesday morning, many of them requested to be released to go home, claiming the last term had been long and tiresome.

He noted that the administration is considering the request, saying it could give the learners time to reflect while also allowing investigators to carry out their work without disruption.

Locals in conjunction with firefighters from Machakos county helped put out the fire.

This is not the first time the school has faced such a crisis. In September last year, another dormitory at the same school was razed, leading to the loss of property worth millions of shillings.

The back-to-back incidents have raised questions about the safety and discipline situation in the institution.
