Kiango Comprehensive School in Bombaba Borabu Ward, Kenyenya Sub-County, Kisii County, caught fire on Wednesday night, September 23, 2026, causing panic among parents and residents.
According to villagers who spoke to Education News, the fire broke out at around 7:00 pm in one of the classroom blocks.
Kiango is a public day primary school with no boarding facilities. By the time of the incident, all pupils had left for their homes, and therefore no injuries to learners were reported. The school serves children from Kiango, Bombaba and neighbouring villages.

Parents who rushed to the scene said they were worried about the destruction of pupils’ books, desks and examination materials.
Local residents, together with teachers, contained the fire using water from nearby homesteads before it could spread to other blocks.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established. Police officers from Kenyenya and Magena, along with area administration officials, visited the scene on Wednesday night and have launched investigations.
Education officials from Kisii County are expected at the school to assess the extent of the damage and advise on learning arrangements.
