Koiwa Boys High School in Konoin, Bomet County, has been elevated to Category One (C1) status, becoming the first national school in Konoin Sub-County.
The elevation marks a major milestone for the institution, which has steadily risen through the ranks on the back of improved academic performance and support from the community.
Koiwa Boys was previously a mixed secondary school before it was transformed into a boys-only institution in 2004 under the leadership of then Konoin MP Sammy Cheruiyot Koech. The change allowed the school to concentrate on boys’ education, while Koiwa Central Secondary School was established as a mixed institution.
The school came into greater prominence in 2012 after it began recording impressive results in national examinations. It has since maintained a strong academic record, helping establish itself as one of the leading schools in the region.
The new C1 status places Koiwa Boys among the country’s national schools, giving it a wider catchment area and an opportunity to admit learners from different parts of the country. The elevation is also expected to enhance the institution’s access to resources and strengthen its capacity to offer a broader range of learning programmes under the Competency-Based Education system.

The achievement has been attributed to the combined efforts of students, teachers, school management, the Board of Management, parents and the wider community. The school is expected to use its new status to consolidate its academic gains while strengthening programmes aimed at nurturing discipline, leadership, talents and other competencies among learners.
The development comes at a time when schools are undergoing major changes under the Competency-Based Curriculum and the transition to senior school, with institutions being categorised according to their capacity and programmes.

For Koiwa Boys, the elevation to C1 status marks the beginning of a new chapter after years of sustained growth.
