Night dormitory fire contained at Tenwek High School, all students safe

A fire broke out at Tenwek High School in Bomet County on Wednesday night, causing panic among students and members of the school community before it was successfully contained.

Initial reports indicated that as many as three dormitories had been affected by the blaze, with students raising alarm as efforts to contain the fire got underway.

Concern mounted as the school community awaited the arrival of emergency responders.

However, in an official statement issued later in the evening, the school administration confirmed that the fire had been brought under control and that all students were safe.

According to the statement, the incident occurred at around 9:20 p.m. when the Annex Main Dormitory caught fire on the second floor.

Fortunately, no students were inside the dormitory at the time as they were attending their evening prep classes.

“At around 9:20 pm of today, Wednesday, 8th July, 2026, our Annex Main Dorm caught fire on the 2nd floor. No one was present in the dormitory at the time, since our boys were attending their evening prep. The inferno has since been contained, and everyone is safe,” the school said.

The administration credited the swift response of the local community and other well-wishers for helping contain the blaze before it could spread further.

“We thank the efforts of all and sundry, including the local community, who arrived minutes after the outbreak and helped us contain it,” the statement added.

The school urged parents, guardians, clergy and other stakeholders to remain calm, assuring them that regular updates would be communicated through the appropriate channels.

The cause of the fire had not been established by the time of publication.

Authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage and commence investigations into the incident.

The fire comes amid heightened concern over school safety following a series of fire incidents reported in learning institutions across the country in recent months.
