Winners of this year’s Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games will have an opportunity to represent the region at international school sports competitions, raising the stakes for athletes competing in Morogoro, Tanzania.
The development was announced during the FEASSSA 2026 Technical Meeting, where officials confirmed that champions will get a pathway to the International School Sport Federation (ISF) Games and the African Schools’ Games.
The opportunity is expected to add significance to the regional championships, with schools now competing not only for FEASSSA honours but also for the chance to take East African school sports to the international stage.
More than 5,000 athletes are expected to participate in the 2026 Games, making the Morogoro edition the largest in FEASSA history. Tanzania will field approximately 1,500 athletes, its biggest delegation ever.
The Games will feature three stand-alone categories: Primary, Special Needs Education (SNE) and Secondary, broadening participation across the region.

The competition will also receive a major financial boost after the East African Development Bank (EADB) agreed to sponsor the Games. Finalists will receive kits while winners will be awarded trophies, with a four-year sponsorship agreement expected to be signed during this year’s championships.
The technical meeting further clarified team nomination rules. Member federations will generally enter two teams in each discipline — the national champion and runner-up. Defending champions will be subject to special provisions, while the host country will be allowed to enter additional teams in line with FEASSA regulations.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s George Omondi will head the FEASSSA Secretariat during the Games.

Rwanda will host the 24th edition of the FEASSSA Games in 2027, as the regional competition continues to expand its role in developing and exposing young sporting talent.
For the athletes heading to Morogoro, the message is clear: winning FEASSSA gold could now be the first step towards representing East Africa on the international school sports stage.
