The Federation of East Africa Schools’ Sports Associations (FEASSA) has ushered in a new Executive Committee following elections held during a hybrid meeting hosted by the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association at GNS Plaza in Uganda.
The elections marked the end of a four-year leadership cycle and brought together delegates from across the region both physically and virtually, in a format that highlighted growing inclusivity and adaptability in the governance of school sports in East Africa.
The newly elected leadership blends continuity with fresh appointments, as several officials retained their positions while new office bearers were introduced to strengthen administration, technical coordination, welfare, and event management across the federation.
At the helm, Uganda’s Justus Mugisha retained the presidency, extending his leadership role in steering FEASSA’s regional sports agenda. Kenya’s David Ngugi also retained his position as Secretary General, ensuring continuity in the federation’s administrative leadership.

Kenya’s Maurice Okumu was elected as Vice Secretary General in a new role aimed at reinforcing coordination within the secretariat, while Tanzania’s Deo Lugayila Joseph retained his position as Vice President – Administration, a role that has been restructured from his previous office as Publicity Secretary.
In technical leadership, Kenya’s Gekonyo Kariuki assumes the position of Vice President – Technical in a redefined docket expected to enhance competition standards and sports development across member countries. Rwanda’s Luke Karemangingo joins the executive as Vice President – Welfare, a new position focused on athlete care and wellbeing.
Uganda’s Patrick Okanya retained his role as Treasurer, while Ayub Khalifa was elected Organising Secretary to oversee FEASSA championships and logistics. Kenya’s Othieno Denis also retained his position as Publicity Secretary, continuing to spearhead communication and media engagement for the federation.

The committee also features regional representatives including Father Gatete Innocent (Rwanda), Anitah Alex Mlay (Tanzania), Kipchumba Maiyo (Kenya), and Apolot Margaret Harriet (Uganda). However, representation slots for Burundi and South Sudan remain vacant and are expected to be filled through future adoption processes.
Speaking after the elections, FEASSA leadership reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening school sports across East Africa through improved collaboration, standardized competition structures, and increased investment in youth development.
Officials also hailed the successful hybrid format of the meeting, noting that it broadened participation and ensured continuity of governance despite geographical challenges among member states.
With the new Executive Committee in place, attention now shifts to strengthening regional championships and enhancing the competitiveness of school sports, as FEASSA continues to position itself as a key driver of youth sports development in East Africa.
