Parents of students at Dr Kiano Boys High School in Murang’a County were on Thursday, June 4, 2026 given barely three hours to collect their sons after the school abruptly announced closure following a solidarity action by learners seeking to go home alongside students from other schools experiencing unrest.
In a text message sent to parents at 11:52 a.m., the school informed them that students in Grade 10, Form Three and Form Four had requested to be allowed to go home in solidarity with learners in other schools.
The message indicated that the request had been made peacefully and instructed parents and guardians to collect their sons from the school by 2:00 p.m. the same day.
“Kindly pick your son who is in Grade 10, Form 3 or Form 4 by 2.00 p.m. today. They want to go home in solidarity with other schools. It is a request they made peacefully,” read part of the message signed by the school’s Board of Management secretary and principal.
While many parents reportedly did not object to the decision to release the students, several have questioned the practicality of the directive requiring every parent or guardian to personally appear at the school within such a short notice period.

Some parents noted that they live and work in different counties, making it difficult to leave work, travel long distances and arrive at the school before the 2:00 p.m. deadline.
According to concerned parents, they proposed alternative arrangements, including sending bus fare to enable their children to travel home independently or allowing the students to remain at school overnight and be collected the following day.
However, parents claim the school insisted that each learner must be picked up in person by a parent or guardian and within the stipulated timeframe.
The development comes amid heightened tension in several learning institutions across the country following a series of school unrest incidents that have prompted increased vigilance by school administrations.
School management had not publicly commented on the concerns raised by parents by the time of publication.
