  • A Nakuru court has barred university student Maureen Chepkirui from discussing or publishing details of a child maintenance case involving Kericho Governor Erick Mutai.
  • The court has ordered the governor to pay Ksh 25,000 monthly for the minor’s upkeep, alongside SHA medical cover for the year.
  • The court has directed the Children’s Officer to file a report within seven days ahead of the next hearing on October 6, 2026.

A court sitting in Nakuru has issued orders restricting university student Maureen Chepkirui from publishing, sharing or discussing proceedings relating to a case involving Kericho Governor Dr Erick Kipkoech Mutai and a minor.

The court, presided over by Jemimah Moragwa, barred Ms Chepkirui from sharing or uttering information concerning the proceedings and the minor on social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, X and Instagram, or through any other forum.

The case involves a dispute over parental responsibility and financial support for the minor. Chepkirui had sought monthly support of Ksh 200,000. The court instead directed that the governor pay an all-inclusive monthly amount of Ksh 25,000, catering for food, shelter, clothing and entertainment, while medical cover under SHA is to be provided for the minor for the year.

The monthly allocation comprises Ksh 5,000 for food, Ksh 10,000 for rent or shelter, Ksh 5,000 for clothing and Ksh 5,000 for entertainment.

The court also declined an application by Governor Mutai’s lawyers, Philip Langat and Felix Keaton, seeking to have the university student summoned. Instead, the court directed that a Children’s Officer prepare and file a report within seven days to assist in the determination of the matter.

The dispute has attracted attention because it involves a university student and issues concerning the welfare and maintenance of a minor.

The matter will be heard again on October 6, 2026, when the court is expected to consider further directions based on the Children’s Officer’s report.
