The police in Migori County have heaped praises on the Area Chief for Kombe location for his actions in defending the rights of children.
The remarks from the police came shortly after the chief alerted them about his wife who led their daughter to undergo Female Genital Circumcision (FGM) in the area.
Speaking in Migori town, Kuria East Sub-county Police Commander Mr. Clet Kimaiyo said that the protection of children from violence was a collective responsibility.
According to the chief, he came home in the evening only to find his 13- years old daughter missing.
Upon inquiry, he was informed that the girl had undergone the cut with the knowledge of their mother and that she was already in seclusion.
That was when the chief alerted the police who invaded the village with the aim of rescuing the girl from seclusion.
They then arrested the suspected, her 35-year old mother whom they identified as Veronicah Ghati.
“We arrested her to face the law, the girl has been taken to hospital for treatment,” said Mr. Kimaiyo.
The police boss appealed to the communities to shun FGM as it remains one of the main obstacles hindering education development in the region.
