Learning has been crippled at Bukacha Primary School in Bomet East sub-county after a teacher committed suicide by hanging himself on Tuesday evening.

Shock and grief engulfed the entire school and the neighbouring community after he was found dangling from the ceiling at his residence in the school’s staff quarters.

According to Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bomet branch Executive Secretary Joseph Malel Langat, the teacher was recently transferred to the said school from Narok county.

“It is sad that we have lost him after just joining the school. We do not know yet what pushed him to take his life in such a manner,” he said.

He expressed concern over the rising cases of mental health issues in the county and asked the government to consider provision of counseling services among teachers.

Bomet East Sub County police boss John Karani, while confirming the incident, said the deceased was spotted entering the house only for his body to be found hanging from the ceiling.

“So far we have, together with the education department, begun investigations into the incident, meanwhile the body has been taken to Longisa Referral Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.” He noted.
