Laikipia University has intensified preparations for the transition to Competency-Based Education (CBE) by equipping its academic staff with skills required to deliver competency-focused teaching, learning and assessment.
The university conducted a two-day academic staff retooling workshop on September 1 and 2, 2026, at the Vision 2030 Hall, Main Campus.
The training focused on CBE curriculum design and development, formulation of learning outcomes, competency-based assessment, constructive alignment, work-based learning and industry engagement.
The workshop was facilitated by Prof Suleiman Mwangi, who guided academic staff on approaches to aligning teaching, learning and assessment with the competencies required by learners and the changing world of work.
The training also provided an opportunity for academic staff to reflect on how university programmes can better equip students with practical skills and competencies needed in the labour market.
The initiative is part of the university’s preparations for the 2029 cohort of learners expected to undertake CBE-compliant programmes. Laikipia University says the exercise is intended to strengthen institutional preparedness for the transition.
Focus on workplace competencies
Laikipia University said continuous staff development is critical to strengthening the quality of teaching and learning and ensuring graduates are equipped with relevant knowledge, skills and competencies.
The university has also been reviewing its academic programmes to align them with competency-based education requirements, with its strategic plan committing the institution to align programmes with CBE and Commission for University Education standards.
The institution said the retooling programme demonstrates its commitment to preparing academic staff for the changing education landscape while strengthening the delivery of quality higher education.
The university’s efforts are aimed at producing competent and future-ready graduates capable of responding to emerging demands in the workplace.
The initiative is anchored on the university’s commitment to “Nurture and Transform for the World.”

Laikipia University has previously indicated that its teacher education programmes are being aligned with CBE requirements, while academic staff have undergone retooling as part of preparations for curriculum reforms.
