Kenyan schools remain in contention for honours in volleyball and basketball as the preliminary stage of the 2026 East Africa School Games concluded in Morogoro, Tanzania, yesterday.
In girls’ volleyball, national champions Kesogon Mixed Senior School and St Martha’s Mwitoti secured places in the semi-finals after finishing top of their respective groups without losing a match.
Kesogon, seeking to reclaim the regional title lost to archrivals Kwanthanze last year, completed their Group A campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Rwanda’s GS Indagaburezi.
The Kenyan side dominated the match, winning 25-8, 25-15 and 25-11 to maintain their unbeaten record.
The result pushed Indagaburezi into second place in Group A and set up a semi-final meeting between the Rwandan side and Mwitoti, who are chasing their first East Africa title.
Mwitoti, the national bronze medallists, also maintained their perfect record after dispatching Uganda’s Katikamu SDA Secondary School 25-19, 25-12 and 25-13.

Their next challenge will be against Rwanda’s 2015 champions GS Indagaburezi, while Kesogon will face Uganda’s Bukedea Comprehensive School, who finished second in Group B.
The other Kenyan boys’ team still in contention is ACK Chepsaita, who finished second in Group B after winning four of their five matches.
Chepsaita, making their East Africa Games debut, will meet group winners Bukedea Comprehensive School in the semi-finals. Uganda’s Namugongo Vocational Secondary School, last year’s finalists, topped the pool.
Namugongo will take on Rwanda’s Nyanza Technical Secondary School in the other semi-final.
In basketball, national champions Butere Girls Senior School Cannons also kept their hopes of reaching the final alive after recovering from an opening defeat.
The Kenyan side lost their first match to hosts Orkeeswa but responded by winning their next two games to book a place in the last four.
Butere will face Uganda’s St Mary’s Kitende tomorrow for a place in the final.

In the boys’ competition, national champions Friends School Kamusinga finished second in Group B with five points and will face either defending champions International Technical School Kigali (ITS Kigali) or Uganda’s St Cyprian High School Kyabakadde in the semi-finals.
Group B winners Amus College of Uganda will meet the second-placed team from Group A.
The semi-final fixtures will therefore determine whether Kenya can add to its medal haul and secure regional titles in both volleyball and basketball.
