Bungoma National Polytechnic is set to hold a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) graduation ceremony on Friday, August 21, 2026, marking a major milestone in the institution’s efforts to formally recognise skills and experience acquired by workers outside the conventional education system.
The ceremony, scheduled for 9 am at the institution’s Main Campus, will bring together trainees from the tourism and hospitality industry who have undergone training under the Tourism Fund Upskilling Programme.
The programme seeks to recognise competencies gained through work experience and informal learning, enabling skilled workers to obtain formal certification and improve their professional opportunities.
According to the event programme, the graduation will celebrate the trainees’ achievements in skills recognition and professional development while highlighting the importance of strengthening Kenya’s tourism and hospitality workforce.
The initiative is being implemented through a partnership between Bungoma National Polytechnic and the Tourism Fund, with the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife also supporting efforts aimed at developing a competent and competitive workforce for the country’s tourism sector.

The RPL approach provides an opportunity for experienced workers to have their existing knowledge and practical skills assessed and recognised against established occupational standards.
For workers in the tourism and hospitality sector, the certification can enhance career progression, employability and access to further training opportunities.
Bungoma National Polytechnic has positioned the RPL programme as part of its broader mandate to promote technical and vocational skills development and provide industry-relevant training.

The graduation is expected to bring together trainees, trainers, government officials, industry stakeholders and other partners to celebrate the successful completion of the programme.
The event also comes at a time when Kenya continues to emphasise skills development and workforce readiness as key drivers of economic growth, particularly in sectors such as tourism and hospitality.
The institution says the milestone demonstrates the value of recognising experience and workplace competencies while creating pathways for workers to advance their careers through formal qualifications.
The ceremony will be held under the theme of celebrating competence, recognising experience and empowering futures, underscoring the role of skills recognition in building a stronger and more competitive workforce.
