Bungoma’s education and sports fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the death of Chemche Secondary School Principal, Mwalimu Oliver Kituyi, who succumbed to kidney failure on Thursday.
His passing has sparked tributes from across the county, with leaders describing him as a distinguished educationist, mentor, and rugby administrator whose influence shaped both classrooms and playing fields for decades.
Leading the tributes, Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli said Kituyi’s death was a major blow to the county’s education sector and rugby community. He praised Kituyi’s dedication to nurturing talent and shaping young minds, noting that his humility and commitment to public service earned admiration far beyond Bungoma.
Kituyi, who founded Bungoma Rugby Club in 1998 and previously played for Mean Machine, also served as Kanduyi Constituency Development Fund (CDF) chairman. Through his teaching career, he mentored generations of rugby players and inspired countless learners.
Nominated Senator Consolata Wakwabubi echoed the sentiments, describing Kituyi as a mentor and sports icon whose service touched numerous lives. She extended condolences to his family, Chemche School fraternity, and the wider community.

Kanduyi MP John Makali said Kituyi’s death was particularly painful, coming barely a month after the loss of his mother. He recalled Kituyi’s pioneering role in rugby and his leadership as a former CDF chairman, stressing that his contribution to sports and education would remain indelible.
Bumula MP Jack Wamboka also mourned Kituyi, calling him a great teacher whose influence extended across many lives. He said Bungoma had lost a true son whose service to family, education, and sports development would never be forgotten.

Leaders emphasised that Kituyi’s legacy will endure through the students he mentored, the rugby players he nurtured, and the institutions he served. His death has left a significant gap in Bungoma’s education and rugby circles, with tributes continuing to pour in from political leaders, educators, sports personalities, and community members.
Kituyi is remembered for his lifelong commitment to education, rugby development, and mentorship, particularly among young people.
