Itigo Girls High School from Chesumei Sub-county in Nandi County will head to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two Games in Thika, Kiambu County, with one clear mission—to win the national title and secure a ticket to the East Africa School Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.
The national championships will be held from August 2 to 6, with the Rift Valley champions among the teams expected to challenge for top honours.
Itigo booked their place at the national games after producing one of the biggest upsets of the Rift Valley championships in Narok County, where they convincingly defeated defending champions St Joseph’s Girls, Kitale, 19-0 in the final.
The victory ended St Joseph’s dominance and crowned Itigo as the new Rift Valley champions.
Team captain Gracias Chebet expressed confidence that the squad is ready to compete against the country’s best.
“We are delighted to have qualified for the national games. Our target is to win the national title and qualify for the East Africa School Games in Morogoro. We have prepared well and believe we can achieve our dream,” said Chebet.
Assistant captain Mitchele Mmboga echoed her skipper’s confidence, saying the team is determined to emerge victorious in Thika.
“We are going there to compete and win. Our opponents should be ready because we are coming fully prepared,” she said.
Coaches confident of strong campaign
Head coach Joachim Melly said the players have remained focused since winning the regional title and are working hard to maintain their momentum.
“We believe in ourselves and expect the best results. The girls have shown commitment, discipline and teamwork throughout the season, and we hope that spirit will carry us through at the national games,” said Melly.
The school’s Head of Sports, Elias Kemboi, described Itigo Girls as a sporting powerhouse, crediting the team’s success to strong support from the school’s management.
Kemboi thanked Chief Principal Juliah Kimenjo Samoei for creating an environment that allows learners to excel in both academics and co-curricular activities.
Samoei said the school remains committed to producing well-rounded students through discipline and hard work.
“We are proud of what the team has achieved. Our school excels because we uphold discipline, which is the foundation of success in both academics and sports. We wish the team all the best as they represent Rift Valley at the national games,” she said.
